At Optima Dental, we prefer to use the latest technology over classic tools that don’t provide the same range of benefits and uses. That’s why we use digital x-rays instead of the antiquated models out there. The classic X-ray has had its time, but today the digital version is much more helpful for both the patient and the dentist.
What is a Digital X-ray?
The basic principle of X-rays remains the same. In our Lawrenceville Georgia clinic, we use radiation to see the condition of the bone and the tooth underneath the gums of our patients. However, the main difference here is that the image produced isn’t fuzzy. Instead, we just place it into an imaging program so that a clear image can be produced. Contrasts can be highlighted and we can even zoom in for greater detail. We can then save the image in a hard disk indefinitely so we can conveniently refer to it whenever necessary.
Advantages of Digital X-rays
The digital version of the x-ray is much more advantageous in many ways than its traditional film-based counterpart. It starts with the amount radiation needed to get an image. A standard X-ray uses 5 times the amount of radiation needed by a digital X-ray machine. While the standard X-ray doesn’t really emit a dangerous amount of radiation, it’s still a good idea to minimize the radiation whenever possible.
A standard X-ray is also much more labor intensive to produce an image and those costs are usually passed on to the patient. What’s more, it takes up to 15 minutes in the darkroom to produce the images for the patient’s full mouth. But with a digital X-ray, it takes almost no time at all. You can get a full series of images to show various stages of your treatment.
Finally, there is the issue of accuracy and versatility. The dentist can enhance the digital images in various ways so that they get a very precise diagnosis of the conditions and problems. The image can be enhanced by magnification, or the contrast may be sharpened. The images may be rendered in different colors or even presented as a negative to present the state of the teeth and bone more accurately. All these changes can be done right away and the new images can be saved without permanently altering the original image.
With all these image enhancements, the diagnoses can be more accurate and devices fitted into the mouth can be made more comfortable. All these advantages give the patient more options, greater comfort, and more effective treatments. It also makes it easier for the dentist to do his job, and that only bodes well for patients too.
