Most people think that dentists are only concerned about their patients’ teeth. Some are more informed, however, and they recognize that dentists are also concerned with the health of the gums. But not many people know that we also deal with the human bone. In dentistry, bone grafting is one common procedure that involves the jawbone, and we offer this procedure at Optima Dental.
When Do You Need Bone Grafting?
When you’ve lost a tooth, a dental implant is an excellent way to replace it. This involves inserting a titanium screw into your jawbone to serve as the foundation for your replacement tooth.
But before you can get your dental implants, your jawbone must first be assessed to see if it is wide enough and tall enough in that area to support the implant. If your jawbone doesn’t have enough material, in other clinics you’ll need to settle for another way to replace your missing tooth. But here in our Lawrenceville Georgia clinic, we offer bone grafting so that you can still get the implants you want.
What is Bone Grafting?
Bone grafting involves putting in new bone material into the recipient site so that you have enough bone material to support the insertion of an implant. This process takes about 6 to 9 months until the new bone material fully fuses with your jawbone.
The donor bone material may be your own, and it can come from other places in your body. The common sources are your chin, your hip, or your shin. If it comes from your hip, you’ll need to undergo surgery and be put under general anesthesia. If the donor bone comes from your chin or shin, only local anesthesia is needed.
Another option is to get bone material from a bone donor bank. This is a very safe option, although of course there is a greater chance that the graft will be successful if you use your own bone material instead.
Risks and Benefits of Bone Grafting
Since bone grafting is an additional procedure to getting implants, you will have to spend more time and more expense before you can get your replacement teeth. And there’s always the chance that the graft will fail, although in general the success rate is very high. We’re not absolutely certain why the graft sometimes fails, although we know that you have a higher risk of failure if you smoke or you have a serious medical condition.
Bone grafting enables you to get dental implants. These devices are the most natural-looking and most comfortable option for replacing missing teeth. You’ll be able to eat and smile confidently and they can last for the rest of your life.
